Kids get cavities. Even with great at-home oral hygiene, there’s still a risk of tooth decay. Dental sealants from your pediatric dentist in Costa Mesa help reduce this risk, keep your child’s teeth healthy, and save you both time and money.
What Are Pediatric Dental Sealants?
Pediatric dental sealants consist of a very thin layer of transparent dental resin, which is applied to your child’s back teeth in a liquid form. Dr. Linda Ngo (Dr. Linda) or Dr. Hannieh Hassani (Dr. Hani) will paint this liquid onto their teeth, then harden it with a special light.
This forms a protective barrier that protects against tooth decay and keeps your little one’s teeth healthy. If your little one is cavity-prone, dental sealants are a great way to help protect their teeth from decay.
Did you know…
Cavities are the most common in the back teeth, since they have deep pits and fissures that can collect food, bacteria, and acid.

The Benefits Of Dental Sealants
Dramatically reduces cavity risk
Particularly for the back teeth, dental sealants for kids help dramatically reduce the risk of tooth decay. This means fewer trips to the dentist.
Completely non-invasive
No drills or needles are needed, and it only takes a few minutes for Dr. Hani or Dr. Linda to apply your child’s sealants. This can be done as part of any routine preventive visit to Little Roots Pediatric Dentistry.
Long-lasting protection
Dental sealants provide powerful protection for up to five years, and can sometimes last even longer. With just one treatment, your child’s teeth will be protected for years to come.
What To Expect From The Dental Sealant Process
Teeth cleaning
First, your child will have their teeth cleaned to prepare for dental sealants. This removes plaque, food debris, and anything else that may interfere with the adhesion of the sealant resin.
Sealant application
Dr. Hani or Dr. Linda will use a special brush to apply clear liquid resin to your child’s tooth. Sealants are usually done on the back teeth, but some kids may need them on their front teeth, too.
Activating the sealant
Once the resin is in place, Dr. Linda or Dr. Hani will activate it with UV light. This hardens the sealant and forms a protective barrier. This process will be repeated for each tooth that needs treatment.
Before & Afters
A smile is worth 1,000 words.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dental Insurance Cover Sealants?
Yes. Almost all dental plans cover the cost of dental sealants for kids under the age of 18 as part of your preventive dentistry benefit. However, every dental plan and every provider is different. For more info, you should check with your policy documents or consult your insurer directly.
How Often Are Dental Sealants Needed?
Most kids get dental sealants once when they're about six years old and their first adult molars emerge. Then, they’ll get them again when they're 12 or 13, and their second set of adult molars erupts. However, every child is different. If your child is very cavity-prone, sealants may need to be applied more often for maximum protection.
